General Flight Training Questions

Everything you need to know about learning to fly, aircraft options, scheduling, and training at Rosecrans Memorial Airport.

The cost depends on your goals and how often you fly. Students pay as they go, and financing is available.

Our current estimates, based on realistic hours:
For national ranges and ways to spend less, read our pilot school cost guide or the Private Pilot cost FAQs.
Keep in mind, FAA requirements are minimums, and many students choose to fly more hours for added confidence before their exams.
Right here at Rosecrans Memorial Airport (KSTJ) in St. Joseph, MO, about 45 to 60 minutes from Kansas City. Our uncongested airport means more time flying and less time waiting to take off. See the details on our light sport pilot training page.
No. A valid U.S. driver’s license is enough for sport pilot training and flying, as long as you meet its health standards. That makes the Sport Pilot Certificate one of the easiest ways to start flying.
If you already hold your Private Pilot Certificate and Instrument Rating, plan on about $23,500 for the commercial stage at FlyTech. See the itemized commercial flight training cost breakdown, and compare paths in Private vs. Commercial Pilot License.
Many of our students commute. Stacking lessons on the same day makes each trip worth it, and we offer limited on-airfield housing for students coming from farther away. Learn more about Kansas City pilot training, pilot training for Wichita students, and flight training for Omaha students.
A CFII is a Certified Flight Instructor who can also teach instrument flying. You need a CFI certificate first, and most students finish CFII training in 3–6 weeks on our accelerated track. Learn more about CFII training.
Each certificate has minimum FAA requirements, but your schedule largely determines how quickly you finish. You can train weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly, there’s no set pace. We’ll help design a schedule that fits both your lifestyle and budget.

Typical timelines:
  • Sport Pilot Certificate – about 6 months with 2–3 lessons per month
  • Private Pilot Certificate – typically 12–18 months

You can also explore our pilot training timeline for more details.
Additional ratings depend on your hours, experience, and training frequency.
Our fleet is built around two of the most trusted training aircraft: the Sling NGT and the Cessna 172. For multi-engine and complex ratings, we also maintain access to a Piper Seminole in Kansas City. Training is supported by our Redbird MCX full-motion simulator.

Yes. To act as pilot-in-command, you’ll need to pass an FAA medical exam with an FAA-approved doctor. However, you can begin training and take discovery flights before obtaining your medical. By the time you’re ready to solo, the exam must be complete. Our team can guide you through the process. For more information, check out our medical resources for students.

Part 61 allows for personalized training plans, accommodating your schedule and learning pace. While Part 141 programs are more rigid, Part 61 often provides more thorough, individualized instruction that leads to better-prepared pilots. Discover why choose FlyTech and our training approach.
